Otra is a new Liverpool club night curated by Dharma Collective (Melodic Distraction) and RoBaSca (Community Manchester), bringing you globally influenced eclectic dancefloor sounds in an intimate environment.
After a first sellout event with Zakia (NTS), for their next installment they invite Poly-Ritmo down as the guest selector on 6th May.
London-based DJ, festival organiser and musician Poly-Ritmo brings heat to the hips and feet with selections from around the globe. While she doesn’t stick to one style or genre, her joyful energy always radiates to the crowd. Weaving tunes that are genuinely eclectic and igniting dancefloors with percussive rhythmic movement.
Having grown up on jazz, soul, Latin and folk, Poly-Ritmo’s musical ear developed from a young age. At 15,she started work experience at Sounds Of The Universe (home of Soul Jazz Records) and knew then she wanted to pursue music. She went on to study Ethnomusicology at SOAS, and her musical knowledge grew deep and expansive. After regular shows on SOAS Radio, Netil and guest appearances on NTS, Jazz FM, andBalamii, Poly-Ritmo became part of the Worldwide FM family, where for over 2 years she has had a monthly residency, spinning anything from forró to broken beat, to kwaito to zouk.
Poly-Ritmo is a regular feature on the festival circuit, playing in legendary spaces such as Glastonbury, Gala, We Out Here, Shambala, Lost Village and many more. She is also the co-founder and creative director of the Basket of Light Festival, an intimate and inspiring event in its third year. The festival features over 30 artists across three stages-a diverse, playful and flavourful curation of international talent. In London, Poly-Ritmohosts a regular night, Chega Mais, with fellow DJ, Volta 45, showcasing established and emerging bands, both from London-based and touring musicians.
During lockdown, Poly-Ritmo recorded several filmed mixes for Vinyl Factory, Boiler Room and My AnalogJournal, which can be viewed on Youtube. One of these mixes, entitled ‘Records from Brazil with Poly-Ritmo’, has over 1 million views, building a dedicated worldwide following. Poly-Ritmo made her Boiler Room debut in 2020 hosting a Brazilian session with live performances from Marcos Valle, Kassin, Sabrina and AlexMalheiros and Ivan Conti
Poly Ritmo will be supported on the night by residents and Otra co-founders, Dharma Collective and RoBaSca. Expect Deep Jazz infused House, Broken Beat, Brazilian, Afrobeat, Kwaito, Latin, Disco and other worldly rhythms.
