Birkenhead’s Zee Davine is probably best known as the big mouth of Merseyside queercore punks Queen Zee, who’s rise from basements to Brixton Academy caught the attention and acclaim of everyone from Iggy Pop to Debbie Harrie. Now one third of Virtual Hardcore outfit Tokky Horror, Davine’s blend of jungle breaks and overdriven crushed samples is more akin to industrial sounds of the early 00’s than retro punk of the 70’s. Yet it is in their solo work Davine is at their most comfortable, sitting between acid house squelch, breakbeats and grinding bass guitar. Their residency at Birkenhead’s Future Yard with the curated Divinity Club Night, Davine claims to be continuing the Bangface coined term “Messyside” sound. Visceral, intense music with a tounge firmly in cheek, those who thought Birkenhead’s club scene died in the 90’s may be proven wrong.
