‘Drag Dings’ – a four episode show by Severus Heyn, aka Franz Genau, and Dan Chan who will be discussing, dissecting, and debating the Queer experience and culture in the UK, from a comedic drag artist perspective.
Severus Heyn (he/him/his) 31 years old, German, works as an illustrator since 2012. His commissions span magazines, theater productions, party series, merchandise and international exhibitions. His guiding principle is ‘Visibility through power’. As part of this, a creates Queer events like the Queer Art Brunch Club (Q-ABC) in the Netherlands. Since 2021, Sev performs and hosts as his drag king alter ego Franz Genau.
Dan Chan (they/them/theirs) 27 years old is a mixed race, non-binary visual artist, drag performer and producer who seeks to breakdown stereotypes of the mixed East and South East Asian experience. Their art aims to create representation and safer spaces for marginalised groups. They have performed and exhibited with Homotopia, Museum of Liverpool & the Tate.
How has drag and fluid gender expression been politicised historically and in the world we live in today? Drag can be a vehicle to raise awareness of social issues, we will discuss moments in queer history like Stonewall and Section 28, and how relevance to how trans+ people are portrayed in the media, and the direct action against this demographic faces by the UK government. Drag performers are key people in the queer nightlife community, but how can they become even more integrated in the community outside of this scene?
How has drag changed from back in the day to today and what does the future of this look like? We will be chatting about the good, the bad and the ugly of these changes, how they have had an impact on drag performers and audiences.
