Chile’s Popular Song Movement

On this the Chilean day of Independence Day, Francisco Carrasco, who arrived in the UK as an eleven yrs old exile from the military dictatorship that was responsible for thousands of deaths, torture and dissapearence, presents LA NUEVA CANCION CHILENA, (The Chilean New Song Movement) which grew from the 60s when artists began to compose songs for the people, about the struggles of the poor and the hopes and dreams of many.

The Nueva Cancion has its roots in the rich diversity of Latin American music and brought together rhythms and indigenous and contemporary instruments South America and throughout the world. Artists such as Violeta Parra, Patricio Manns, Atahualpa Yupanki, Inti -Illimani and Victor Jara, who was tortured and riddled with 44 bullets by the military dictatorship will form part of this show. Well known artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Sting and U2 have often paid tribute to Victor Jara and his legacy.
