Artist Focus: Charli XCX

Some artists leave a legacy that stretches far beyond a great single or a number 1 album.

Artist Focus is a new series hosted by the extended Melodic Distraction family that deep dives into the life and times of the musicians that have defined the sound of modern music. From the stone cold classics to the unearthed gems and forgotten B-sides, our community tribute an hour of music by a single artist that has had a notable impact on their life.

It’s Charli Baby!

From humble beginnings on MySpace back in 2008, Charli XCX has exploded on to the scene and catapulted herself into a world of pop stardom that sees her transition into a self-proclaimed ‘workaholic-party-animal’. Maybe all you need in life is a compulsory friend on social media called Tom and the next thing you know, the world’s your oyster.

Charli XCX is a singer, a songwriter, an entrepreneur, a music video director, a record label executive and even has a series on Netflix about how she created a pop band. She is also a real advocate of women’s rights, feminism and an ally to the LGBTQ community.

This week, Kevin from UnknownEnd leads us though an hour of the intricacies and popularisation of so-called ‘hyper pop’ or ‘PC music’ which seeks to understand not just the releases Charli XCX has herself, but the wider influence she has on this emerging genre and her ‘Charli’s Angels’. We can’t promise anything, but we might ‘Break The Rules’!
