Manchester and Glasgow-based trio Shell Company share their new single ‘March 3rd’ on Morsel.
‘March 3rd’ pays tribute to the iconic sample of Samantha Ronson’s ‘Built This Way’ from the Mean Girls soundtrack, as the lyrics explore feelings of entrapment and failure.
Having released their initial EP on Fixed Abode, Shell Company have received support from Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC6 as well as Dazed and Boomkat.
Through sombre synths, whispered glitches, intriguing vocal production and downtempo drum machine, ‘March 3rd’s sonic landscape plays well with the gritty, bitter delivery of its spoken word passages.
Capturing adolescent angst in all its gloom, the speaker murmurs: “March 3rd, my first productive month, while I wait for something better, they’re all doing something better… there’s no place I can afford to put these words, so I abandon them in the old car, set fire to them like I know you did…”
