MDR Staff Picks: Lupini – Lupini’s Hothouse

As most of you are probably aware, the current Covid-19 crisis has meant that many of us now have a lot of time on our hands. At Melodic Distraction, we saw this as an opportunity to not only put some of this extra time to good use, but to also put it towards another avenue for you folks at home to explore and kill some of that extra time you’ve been looking to fill.

With that in mind, we launched our ‘MDR Staff Picks’ playlist series! We took a pause last week to support artists via Bandcamp’s awesome scheme that saw them waive their fees for the second time since lockdown began. We’re down to the final two playlists now, so which member of the team is stepping up next we hear you ask?

Our penultimate playlist comes courtesy of studio cat & station manager Lupini. Co-founder of ATHE, and ambient aficionado, Lupini’s tastes are as diverse as they are spectacular – don’t be surprised to see “dungeon synth” sandwiched between country and bluegrass (arguably her greatest musical love). Host to two radio residencies, Kaleidosound on Netil Radio is a peep into Lupini’s tastes in ambient, dub-pop or avant-synth sounds, whilst Club Dread lands anywhere from reggaeton to electro to IDM to acid techno. She hosts free/pay-as-you-can DJ Workshops for Womxn and co-founded ATHE, a party platforming womxn, nb and queer artists playing in the harder spheres of dance music.

In her own words, Lupini sums up her playlist as “Named after Brian Aldiss’ seminal flora-based dystopian fiction, Lupini’s Hothouse is music with a sci-fi tint. This week journeys from greenhouse ambient to nearly-trance, via stop offs at glassy IDM, electro and hardcore.”

Designed to be listened to in order, check out Lupini’s playlist below. Better yet, check out the more extensive Buy Music Club list where you can see more of Lupini’s taste and better support the artists featured.
