MDR Selects – R Lyle: Cinematic Electronic

MDR Selects, a new (old) series where we invite our favourite artists, record stores, labels and more to curate a playlist of songs that hold specific meaning to them. Hailing from Sheffield, producer and Future Bubbler alumnus R. Lyle shares some super dreamy music with us. With his own tunes described as “hazy, rain-soaked little worlds” by NowThen Magazine, we can see how R. Lyle’s selections have shaped and influenced his creations.

“I’ve been slowly writing music part-time for three years and up until now I have been struggling to find what my ‘sound’ is. Recently, I’ve noticed a certain level of maturity to my production style and musical arrangement as my tastes change; developing a more dark and cinematic style to my work.

I’ve always had a vested interest in film scores and electronic music and I enjoy listening to the detailed worlds that a piece can create. The cinematic style is capable of bringing incredible emotional weight and texture, allowing for pieces to become fully immersive. The sheer versatility that is available with electronic music means the listener can be transported to a new place with each encounter. Within this juxtaposition of both styles I have been able to find a sweet spot which I’ve tried to imbue in my own music. This style can hopefully be heard in both my contribution to the recent “Fabric Presents: Bonobo” compilation and forthcoming unreleased music.

The collection of tracks I’ve brought together share this “other-worldly” quality and capture a dark atmospheric detail. Hopefully the playlist mirrors the current direction I have started to take creatively and give a taster of what to expect in the coming future…”
