Okay. You know it. We’re all stuck in quarantine. We may have been living off peanut-butter toasties and seeing how long we can leave our hair unwashed because, well… just because. But at least we’ve still got the internet (oh, holy one!) and the music. With everyone being stuck indoors, we have a brand new online series for you: Lockdown Live Lounge.
Lockdown Live Lounge invites our favourite artists, local and afar, to live-stream a mini gig from their homes. Every Monday and Thursday at 2pm give your ears and eyes a little hug from the freshest talent across the UK. An intimate experience direct from living room to living room, we invite you to sink into our ‘Lockdown Live Lounge’, but from the comfort of your own home. You don’t even have to get dressed to go out.
This week we’re back with Stepping Tiger to bring Reuben James into your homes! We are super stoked for a live set from this singer, songwriter and pianist, boasting virtuoso jazz techniques and an evocative voice. Reuben James is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and creatively assured artists to have emerged in recent years, exploring the boundaries between jazz and pop within his original material. Although perhaps best known for his ongoing collaborations with Sam Smith, which have included co-writing songs for Smith’s 4 million-selling album The Thrill of It All, James has written for and performed with an array of international star acts including the likes of Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Herbie Hancock, Elton John, John Legend, Tori Kelly, Little Mix, Disclosure and Liam Payne amongst many others! Reuben signed with Warner/Chappell in 2018 before releasing his debut EP Adore, which landed to critical acclaim in 2019. He’s just released two silky smooth new singles ‘My Line‘ and ‘So Cool‘ – check them out.
Following Reuben James is the genre-melding foursome Samurai Kip! Unique and fresh but somehow familiar, they craft fun and soulful creations. The band originated with the subtle garage jams of singer Aidan Mcguire and drummer Michael Lindberg, later joined by Michael’s older brother – Jamie Lindberg, on bass. After building a virtuosic chilled out sound with a King Krule-esque vocal, they later added jazz sensibility with trombonist, Charly Reed.
Despite playing shows with some of their true North West jazz contemporaries such as Tetes De Pois and The Blurred Sun Band, their music has always captured the favour of more than just the jazz enthusiasts. Samurai Kip have found themselves playing to sell-out crowds across the Liverpool music scene, flirting with the likes of SPQR, Eyesore & The Jinx and the Eggy Records crowd. As well as their live shows, their wide appeal has not gone unnoticed online, with their first two singles ‘Ode to Moonlight’ and ‘Mr Void’ racking up close to 40,000 Spotify streams. Most recently, they’ve brought bands from all over the country to Liverpool’s much beloved Sound Food and Drink venue, running their own sell-out shows and collaborating with our good pals Wavertree Worldwide.
Join us on our Facebook page for Reuben James on Monday 4th May, 2pm and Samurai Kip on Thursday 7th, 2pm.
